What our ancestors knew: Teaching and learning through storytelling

R.L Laurence & D.S Paige

An Article from the Spring edition of New Directions for Adult Learning. While this research is set in the adult learning sector there are strong connections to Kōrero Paki philosophy.

It unpacks the details about the absence of the stories of indigenous cultures in our western history books and how this is likely to be because the stories of indigenous cultures were oral and often never written down.

Traditionally these stories were handed down over generations and oral story telling is a way to keep these stories alive. It is also a way to challenge the dominant discourse that privileges western culture. We can take a multimedia approach to our indigenous stories and extend our reach. Storytelling is a way to of healing alienation.
